What is a Frenectomy?

Some children and adults require a frenectomy, also known as "tongue-tie surgery", if the frenulum attached under their tongue causes issues when speaking, eating, moving the tongue, or even breathing while awake or sleeping. Some individuals may also experience gum recession. A frenectomy involves having a dentist cut the frenulum/"tongue-tie" and freeing the tongue.

Benefits of a Frenectomy

There are many benefits to getting a frenectomy if you suffer from having a tongue-tie, including:

  • Improved speech
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduced pain or discomfort
  • Reduced risk of tooth decay/cavities and gum disease
  • Improved smile appearance - some tongue-ties cause gaps, which may be unwanted
  • Increased bite function
  • Improved swallowing

If your child has a tongue-tie/frenulum that needs to be removed, please call our office at (941) 625-7413 to schedule a consultation. We provide comfortable frenectomy services in Port Charlotte, Florida to patients of all ages.

Frenectomy FAQs

A person may need a frenectomy if they have speech difficulties, trouble swallowing or eating, receding gums or periodontal disease, or pain and discomfort.
If a tongue tie isn't corrected, a person may experience speech difficulties, eating and swallowing issues, pain, and be more susceptible to developing gum disease as they grow older.
Frenectomies are fairly quick surgeries, taking 10 to 30 minutes to complete. Dentists who use laser dentistry techniques may be able to complete the surgeries even faster.
The speed of healing after undergoing a frenectomy depends on the individual, but generally only takes one to two weeks post-operation.
A frenectomy may cause minor discomfort, but shouldn't be too painful because a local anesthesia is administered, numbing the area.
